It's been a few years since my boy Jackson the Frenchie passed away, yet I’m reminded of him every day.

We now believe dogs were domesticated at least 15,000–30,000 years ago. But it took a bit longer before our furry friends began showing up in art.

However an animal is represented on stage, there is something special about seeing the human/animal bond portrayed in a live theater production.

Among the many types of dogs who share our lives, those now known as working dogs stand out for their intelligence, strength, vigilance, and unwavering loyalty.

It was only in the last few centuries that dogs emerged as the primary subjects in works of art, as stand-alone models worthy of their own canvases.

I am a veterinarian, and I am an artist.

Jackson was my little guy, but I also shared him with everyone. He was a muse to so many artists, with his adorable mug appearing on murals, posters, buttons, totes, T-shirts, and even tattoos.

I was raised with a house full of rescue pups. And I’m convinced that the dogs I thought I rescued have, in reality, saved me in my own darkest hours.

In photography, there’s a niche where art meets altruism. Where the lens captures not just images but the stories and emotions that can change lives.

Recently, two animal-loving punkers - Farida Mazlan and Angel Fischer - joined forces to create an amazing benefit for Rocket Dog Rescue held in March at Fallout SF in the North Beach District.

One of my favorite programs at Marin Humane is called Compassion Corner. Every two weeks, we welcome adults with developmental disabilities to the shelter for special visits with dogs, kittens, guinea pigs, and rabbits.
