SEPTEMBER 2023
Dogs Food
and Treats
This month’s issue is supported in part by SF Animal Medical Center and dog lovers like you.
Welcome to Bay Woof, September 2023
Bone appetit! And welcome to Bay Woof’s annual food issue.
Trainers often tell us that being food-motivated makes a dog more willing to learn so he can score that yummy treat. If we’re smart, we can take advantage of a dog’s desire for self-improvement (by which we mean more treats, of course). The trick is using our dog’s innate chow-hound tendencies to entice them to do our bidding. Or maybe just to sit down.
In this month’s food-and-treats issue, Bay Woof authors focus on how to use our human powers to better collaborate with those furry beings who share our kitchens. Proprietor Stephanie Miller of Bernal Beast has the scoop on food puzzle toys and tips for using these great devices more effectively at home. Trainer Althea Karwowski of Sit Stay SF offers guidance on training with food, with special attention paid to the rare dog who isn’t particularly food-motivated. Ren Volpe of Go Dog Pro provides a practical guide to healthy training treats that won’t break the family’s food budget. And Sara Scott has the lowdown on how to get Fido to swallow that necessary medication without a wrestling match.
When your dog is done chowing down, maybe you’d like them to join you for a jog? Don’t miss Cyd True’s fun, informative account of training her Husky mix Balto to run with her. Let’s just say it’s a process. And if you decide to run all the way out of town with (or without) your dog, Dr. Julie Smith of SAGE Compassion 4 Animals helps with some handy travel lists.
Elsewhere in the issue, Nose for News dives into dog headlines, the SF Animal Control and Welfare Commission previews its September docket, Red and Howling offers a comic take on delicacies, and Mr. Smarty Pants is ready with arcane tidbits to brighten your party patter.
Hang out with this issue of Bay Woof and you’ll definitely be hungry for more time with your dog. Until next month, a big chef’s kiss to all!
