Valentine Love
Welcome to Bay Woof, February 2021
Hello Dog Lovers,
February is the month of love! Of course, here at Bay Woof central, it’s always dog-love month, but February includes some especially sweet valentines to our favorite species.
For this month’s issue, Bay Woof reached out to punk-philosopher-poet Lynn Breedlove, knowing his take on a rainbow-hued dog Valentine would not disappoint, and we hope you’ll agree. In other love news, our pal Ren Volpe asks five dogs to describe their perfect Valentine’s Day (warning: don’t read this one if you hate laughing). Even dog-park advocacy is full of love with an update from the Friends of Esprit Park as they rally the community for a crucial February 18 public hearing to support a dog-friendly park refresh.
There’s still more to love in this month’s columns: The Monthly Woof by Kelly Gorman Dunbar, Ask Dr. Dog by Dr. Ilana Strubel, plus how to give your dog the gift of relaxation in Good Dog! by Sara Scott. We’ve also got Nose for News with dog tidbits from near and far, Commission Tails by SF Animal Commissioner Jane Tobin, zingy dog factoids from Mr. Smarty Pants Knows, and Red and Howling with the perfect e-Valentine card just in case you need a little boost. Finally, this month’s Shelter Zone shows how the ever-loving staff at Contra Costa Animal Shelter continues to navigate the challenges of running a shelter in a global pandemic, an ongoing act of devotion.
Even if we humans occasionally sour on this Hallmark holiday or are disappointed by love’s shortcomings, we need only look as far as the nearest canine to remember true love exists, as it always has, as long as there are dogs.
Happy Valentine’s Month from the Bay Woof crew!

P.S. A huge thanks to our readers and supporters who helped Bay Woof Foundation meet our year-end fundraising goal last month, including matching funds from Charles Schwab. We’re feeling the love from all of you! If you missed this, don’t despair. A donation to Bay Woof is always accepted and appreciated at any time of year. Your dogs will thank you and so will we.
