Big Dogs Rule
Welcome to Bay Woof, August 2021
Howdy Dog Lovers,
We love big mutts, and we cannot lie. This is BIG DOG month at BayWoof and our hearts are swelling to match the size of those XL pups.
Our August feature stories include Sirius’s Kelly Gorman Dunbar on her big love for big dogs. Cyd True (True Training 101) interviews Kimberly McCarty to get the lowdown on training large pups. Plus we’ve got a story all the way from the UK about a big old Border Collie who lost her hearing and learned a new way to communicate with her human guardians to keep the herding job she loves.
The big dog theme continues with some of our regular columns. Ask Dr. Dog, penned by our pal Dr. Ilana Strubel of A Well Adjusted Pet, warns about a malady affecting larger older dogs called GOLPP. August’s Shelter Zone, written this month by Trish Kohrt, offers an inside look at the big pups who find their way to German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California (GSRNC). And Bay Woof newcomer, trainer Jonathan Jones of Wishbone Trinity Dog Training, dispels some big dog myths in this month’s Good Dog! column.
Elsewhere in the issue, Nose for News corrals fresh canine headlines, including a piece about the recent transfer of more than a 100 Tulsa, OK, dogs to 13 Bay Area shelters. Ren Volpe of Go Dog Pro explores the pros and cons of tracking your furry pal with the new Apple AirTags. Commission Tails, contributed by SF ACWC’s Jane Tobin, chronicles the work of VetSOS, a dedicated team of local veterinarians helping pet guardians experiencing homelessness. And Mr. Smarty Pants is ready with his extra large factoids guaranteed to make you a hit at any summer yappy hour.
Of course, in the end, neither the bloodlines nor the size of the mutt matters much - we love them all. Thanks for celebrating big dogs with Bay Woof this month, and all dogs every month.
Wishing you a great big happy August!
