Simon Says Sit:
Kids, Dogs, and Synchronized Bonding

A new study by researchers at Oregon State University found that family dogs matched their movements to those of the kids they live with, moving when the children did and staying still when they stopped. According to the researchers, this type of physical synchrony often signals emotional bonding – like you needed a study to tell you that.

It’s Me, Mom!
Lost Pup Rings Doorbell Camera

A South Carolina dog spooked by fireworks went missing for seven hours only to ring her owners’ doorbell at 3 a.m., jumping up and putting her face in the doorbell camera just for good measure. Her people have no idea how Rajah, an 18-month-old Hound mix, learned to ring the doorbell, saying she doesn’t go into the front yard except to the car and has never seen them use the doorbell or the attached camera.

But after hours of frantic searching, her family was thrilled to have their wayward girl back, no questions asked. “She had thorns on her and seemed to have rolled in poop,” said her mom. “So it seems like she had a great time.”

Did Your Pup Make the Top 100?

The folks at BarkBox recently crunched their data to come up with a list of the year’s 100 most popular dog names. Number one is Bella, followed in descending order by Luna, Charlie, Lucy, Cooper, Max, Bailey, and Daisy, plus 92 more, with Brody holding down last place at #100. Canny readers will note that the list was based on BarkBox’s own subscribers, so really these are the most popular names among humans willing to fork over $29 a month for a customized toy and treat subscription.

That said, we didn’t waste any time checking out the rankings of our three BayWoof office dogs. Stella was the clear winner, coming in at #13, followed by Hank at #56. Link, a Lemon Beagle charmer, didn’t make the list at all – but then we always knew he was rare.

Gertie Gets Out With a Little Help from Her Friends

Cincinnati firefighters recently came to the rescue of Gertie, a white mixed breed pup who had apparently fallen into a crevice between two concrete walls. It all started when Gertie set off for a quick romp in the woods. When she didn’t return home, her worried family searched the area and put up posters with her photo, but Gertie was nowhere to be found.

Five days later, a nearby homeowner heard yelps coming from behind their garage wall and called 911. The responding firefighters quickly determined a dog was wedged in the narrow space between two concrete walls. With no way to lift her out of the crevice, firefighters carefully used saws and a sledgehammer to carve a hole to freedom for Gertie. Tired but uninjured, Gertie happily wagged her nub of a tail at her rescuers – the universal thank you in dogspeak.

California Shelters Lend a Hand to Overcrowded Okies

Thirteen California shelters recently stepped up to help a critically overburdened animal shelter in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On July 19, a charter flight loaded with more than 100 Tulsa dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens landed in Hayward, CA, where a team of staff and volunteers was waiting to whisk the cute cargo to safe accommodations where they’ll be cared for until they find their forever homes. Air transportation came courtesy of the BISSEL Pet Foundation, a charitable offshoot of the well-known vacuum makers, who clearly have a vested interest in pets and their fur.

Looking for a new Okie pal?
