Making a Difference for Dogs: Napa Humane Celebrates Two Years of Positive Reinforcement Training

Since its founding in 1973, Napa Humane has been dedicated to improving the lives of companion animals in Napa Valley. While our mission has always focused on education and prevention, we recognize that addressing behavioral challenges is also crucial to reducing pet surrenders and shelter overcrowding. That’s why, two years ago, we launched Napa Humane’s Dog Training Program, which focuses on positive reinforcement as a key tool to strengthen the bond between pets and their people.

What is Positive Reinforcement Dog Training?

Positive reinforcement dog training encourages desirable behaviors by rewarding the dog with something they enjoy, such as treats, praise, or playtime. This creates a clear connection between the behavior and the reward, increasing the likelihood the dog will repeat the behavior.

The goal is to focus on what the dog does right, rather than punishing unwanted behavior. This method fosters trust, patience, and mutual respect, creating a healthier relationship between dog and owner. Rewarding good behavior helps  dogs learn quickly and confidently, making the training process enjoyable for both the pet and their owner.

Why Positive Reinforcement Works

Positive reinforcement works because it taps into the natural learning process. Like people, dogs thrive on encouragement. When a dog receives a reward for a specific behavior, they associate that action with something positive, motivating them to repeat it.

This training method also improves a dog’s emotional well-being, unlike punishment-based techniques that can lead to anxiety or fear. Positive reinforcement encourages confidence, helping dogs become more secure and less anxious. Additionally, it allows owners to address a wide range of behaviors - from basic commands to resolving more complex issues like separation anxiety or leash pulling - creating a harmonious relationship between pet and owner.

How Napa Humane’s Dog Training Supports the Community

Napa Humane has always been committed to education and prevention, and our Dog Training Program is no different. We understand that behavioral issues are a major factor contributing to pet surrenders. Our program recognizes the need for early intervention and helps families address these challenges before they escalate.

“We believe in setting pets and their people up for success,” says Wendi Piscia, executive director of Napa Humane. “At Napa Humane, our mission is rooted in compassion and prevention. Adding dog training allows us to give families the tools to build lifelong connections with their pets - and to address or even prevent behavioral challenges before they begin.”

In the two years since its launch, Napa Humane’s Dog Training Program has already supported over 625 dogs and their families. Through a focus on positive communication, our trainers teach both pets and owners how to interact effectively, helping to prevent behavioral issues and improve the overall quality of life for pets in our community.

“The best part of this work is watching the transformation - seeing nervous dogs gain confidence, puppies learning their first cues, and people building strong relationships with their pets,” says Alyssa Vincent, CPDT-KA, Napa Humane’s pet education program manager and dog trainer. “This program has been a game changer for so many families.”
