  • Dogs who are trained to assist people who are deaf at the Beatrice Wright Centre near York, England, learn to rest their noses on their owners' knees when everything is fine but to lie on the floor to indicate an emergency.

  • Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, famous for his series of paintings depicting dogs playing poker, also invented another art form. He’s said to have originated the large boards often displayed at carnivals or other tourist traps, featuring images like a fat man in a bathing suit or a person riding a donkey with holes cut out for people to put their heads through and pose for photos.

  • Rescued street dogs in Uganda are being trained to provide comfort to past victims of trauma due to the country's unrest. 

  • Archaeologists in New South Wales, Australia, have recently discovered a 1,000-year-old burial mound for a dingo, also known as an Australian wild dog. The Barkindji ancestors who had buried the dingo appear to have done so with the same care and ceremony as would have been shown to any beloved human member of the community and to have looked after the grave for centuries.

  • A company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, is using specially trained dogs to detect hidden mold in houses. Air sampling can detect airborne mold but only trained dogs can locate the actual source.
