  • Scientists analyzing DNA bone fragments have concluded that interbreeding between Dingoes and European dog breeds peaked in the mid-1900s but very little has occurred in the last 50 years. Interbreeding with European breeds began after 1788 when the first European ships arrived in Australia.

  • Some scientists say dogs can have autism-like traits. Technically termed "canine dysfunctional behaviors," these behaviors fit into three broad areas: repetitive actions, social interaction changes, and sensory sensitivities.

  • Does your dog need a sweater or jacket? It depends on the weather, of course, but if you have a smaller dog the answer is probably yes. That’s because their body surface area to body mass has a different ratio, meaning they will get colder than larger dogs. Breeds that may benefit from a cozy sweater include Italian Greyhounds, French Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Pugs, Maltese, and Yorkshire Terriers. Larger dog breeds — particularly those with double coats such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Huskies, German Shepherds, Border Collies, and Newfoundlands — are more easily able to regulate their body heat, even in cold or wet weather.

  • University of Cambridge scientists have found that a gene linked to "trainability" in Golden Retrievers is associated with intelligence and emotional sensitivity in humans.

  • According to puppy training specialist Kim Paciotti with the Empowered Puppy Program, the best way to get your dog to stop unwanted behaviors is to teach them better alternatives. If your puppy barks when the doorbell rings, train them to go to their bed instead. If you catch your puppy chewing on your shoe, replace it with a chew toy. If your puppy jumps on people to greet them, teach them to sit as an alternative.
