Working Like
a Dog!

This month’s issue is supported in part by SF Animal Medical Center and dog lovers like you.

Welcome to Bay Woof, June 2024

Working Like a Dog

My dog Stella turns up her nose at the word “work” as though she were a pampered debutante (she is not).  But luckily for us humans, there are many dogs whose work ethic far exceeds that of my favorite elderly couch potato. And this month’s Bay Woof is all about the Working Dog!

In fact, working hard is second nature to our cover dog, Gremly, as it is to all the dogs and handlers with the storied California Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). Don’t miss Grem’s riveting tale, penned by her handler Cat McBride, about the incredible skill and drive needed to track and locate lost or endangered humans all across our state.

Still on the working dog beat, we’ve got pieces by dog trainer Sara Scott, Mark Ruefenacht with Dogs4Diabetics, Dr. Lynna Feng with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Bob Bryant with Mission K9 Rescue, and service dog trainer Angela Gardner. Each of these writers shines a light on their own piece of the working dog world - fascinating, informative stuff.

Elsewhere in the issue, trainer Steph Haddad brings you the low down on last month’s amazing Canine Science Symposium. And don’t forget to check out our pack of June columnists including Bay Woof regulars Mikaila Garfinkel, S. Emerson Moffat, Amy Luwis, and RU Steinberg.

We can’t all have a dog who saves lives, but we can all enjoy reading about these amazing animals. Whether you’re on the couch or on the trail, may you and your dog enjoy life together - however you choose to spend it.

Happy Pride Month!
