Regardless of how you consume your news and media, you’ve likely been overloaded with messages about the state of our government and the volume of changes happening right now. Moments like these can make us all feel powerless.
But amid the chaos, there have been inspiring stories about citizens standing up for what’s right.
And some of these stories are happening right here in San Francisco.
The Commission of Animal Control and Welfare held its monthly meeting on February 13, during which the commission unanimously supported recommendations to address cruelty in live animal markets within the city. Commissioners heard detailed and impactful reporting from representatives of the nonprofit Animal Outlook, who shared findings from their ongoing investigations about the treatment and processing of animals in the city’s live markets.
But what resonated the most for me - and perhaps for other commissioners - were the nearly two dozen Bay Area residents who took the time to share their own perspectives and feedback on the issue with us. This was on top of the many comments we received prior to the meeting.
These were people with busy lives who nevertheless showed up for animals. We heard from professionals such as a former vet tech and a legal professional specializing in animal welfare law. We heard from residents who have been advocating on this issue for a long time. One of the most impactful statements came from someone who grew up near a live animal market in San Francisco.
Regardless of the perspective or the issue, I have two things to say to everyone who attended the meeting: thank you – and please keep showing up. Share your opinions, your point of view, your ideas, your feedback. Tell us why you do or don’t support initiatives the commission is focusing on. Let us know what’s on your mind.
The letter of recommendations about live animal markets approved by the commission is a big moment – and an exciting way to kick off the year. Each month, I’m heartened to see commissioners and community members push forward more issues, all with the goal of making a positive impact for our local animal companions and wildlife. To me, it’s proof that even when chaos is around us, people are not powerless. Together, we can (and will) work for change.
While the commission’s agendas are constantly evolving, here’s a snapshot of issues you may see us focus on in 2025:
Horseback riding in Golden Gate Park
Rodenticide and glue trap usage within San Francisco
Coexisting with coyotes and other city wildlife
Giant pandas and the San Francisco Zoo
…and many more.
Regardless of the issue, any discussion we have or recommendations we make are better when we hear directly from residents like you. Are there any issues that you’d like the commission to know about or think we should prioritize? We welcome in-person comments during our regular meetings on the second Thursday of every month. Or you can drop us a line - find details on our webpage.
Again, many thanks to everyone who has contributed their expertise or shared public comment so far. We look forward to a continued conversation.
