Welcome to Bay Woof, August 2022
The Dog Days Are Here!
The summer heat seems to be melting everything, everyone, everywhere – except here of course, where Karl the Fog has kept us San Franciscans under 70° while the rest of the world swelters. But wherever August finds you, we hope you’ll enjoy this month’s pack of summer reading - perfect for curling up with on a shady park bench, under a beach umbrella, or inside with the AC cranked to 11.
Ren Volpe of Go Dog Pro dives into the scorching debate on shock collars vs. e-collars (spoiler: it’s a name game). Trainer Sara Scott offers hot tips for dealing with canine separation anxiety. Sandy Rogers of Ace Dog Sports warms to a new topic: understanding your dog's learning pace. And Dr. Ken Gorczyca digs into local lore with a sizzling tale of famous Bay Area pooches, past and present.
Things are heating up on the shelter beat, too, as rescue groups nationwide grapple with a surfeit of surrendered pooches. Animal Commissioner Jane Tobin writes about how SFACC is managing the overflow, with a timely reminder to support this work by donating, fostering, or adopting. And if you need more encouragement, this month’s Shelter Zone brings you a poignant dog’s eye view of Oakland Animal Services that you won’t want to miss.
Elsewhere in the issue, we’ve got the scoop about online training from Althea Karwowski of Sit Stay SF, plus a primer on front door manners from Ami Macfarlane of Stay N Touch Dog Training. And you’ll definitely want to check out this month’s Ask Dr. Dog column about how an innovative program from San Francisco Aid for Animals is helping keep vet bills under control for needy residents.
Your summer reading wouldn’t be complete without the latest tips for helping your furry friend manage the heat, courtesy of this month’s Nose for News. And of course, those twin anchors of love and party quips - Red and Howling and Mr. Smarty Pants, respectively - round out August’s hot summer issue.
The calendar may call these the Dog Days, but here at Bay Woof, that’s every day. So grab your furry pal and maybe a couple of ice cream cones for you both. Hot or cold, rain or shine, just enjoy these summer days you have together.
