From Heartbreak to Home: How Timmy Found His Second Chance

When 12-year-old Tim, a gray-muzzled Chihuahua mix, arrived at Joybound People & Pets in early October 2025, he was cautious and clearly heartbroken. Through no fault of his own, this tiny dog suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar environment, outside the comfort of his home.
Despite the upheaval, Timmy, as nicknamed by staff, showed glimmers of spunkiness. On walks, he trotted with purpose, nose to the ground, curious and inquisitive. But when it was time to return to his kennel, he hesitated. The shelter, while safe and loving, can be especially overwhelming for senior dogs like Timmy. He was clearly upset yet his sweet spirit never faded.
Beyond his emotional distress, Timmy was also suffering physically. Joybound’s veterinary team discovered he had advanced Stage 4 periodontal disease, making everyday activities, especially eating, painful. He would need two separate dental surgeries to remove 14 infected teeth, but thanks to our generous community of donors, Joybound was able to provide this essential care.
A Foster Family Opens Their Hearts
After his first surgery, Timmy was placed in a foster home to heal and prepare for his second operation. It was there that things truly began to turn around for him.
His foster family gave Timmy the time and space he needed to adjust and start to feel better. At first, he was nervous and a bit aloof. But within a few days, he began settling in. He learned the rhythm of the household and quickly became especially attached to his foster mom.
Timmy proved to be smart and eager to please, already understanding multiple commands including sit, shake, and come. He also revealed some quirky preferences, like his love of pillows (great to burrow under or nap on), his selective palate (chicken - yum!), and his love of car rides, especially when he could stick his nose out the window to take in the smells. Though he was initially standoffish with strangers, he warmed up quickly, especially when offered treats and gentle attention. He even began accompanying his foster mom to work, quietly lounging in her cubicle, sunbathing by the door, and charming coworkers.
A Foster Fail
Sometimes, fostering leads to something even more beautiful: adoption. At Joybound, our foster families always have the first opportunity to adopt their foster animals if they so choose. It’s a moment we call a “foster fail,” and it’s one of our favorite outcomes.
And that’s exactly what happened here.
After weeks of bonding, healing, and learning to trust again, Timmy’s foster family knew he wasn’t going anywhere. He was a part of their family, and they decided to officially adopt him.
“He’s settled in beautifully,” his forever mom says. “He’s incredibly smart and resilient and such a loving companion. Even after everything he’s been through, he continues to show so much affection and heart.”
Today, Timmy lives happily with a fellow senior Chihuahua and three cats. He enjoys taking daily walks, soaking up the sun, snuggling on the couch, and going on car adventures. He’s gained confidence, found new favorite people, and even received his very own car safety seat so he can see the world from the passenger window with ease.
“He has this funny little snort that makes us laugh, and he loves to perch on the back of my chair and snuggle into my neck,” his mom adds. “He is a gentle soul with a big heart, and we’re lucky to have him.”
Fostering with Joybound
Timmy’s story is a powerful example of how fostering can make a life-changing difference for an animal. For Timmy, foster care was not just a temporary solution. It was the start of his healing and a new life.
At Joybound, fostering is flexible and designed to fit a variety of lifestyles. From one- to two-night Dog SleepRovers to longer-term medical recovery, Joybound offers a range of opportunities to help animals in need. We provide everything from medical care to food and treats, potty supplies, and any daily essentials. In addition, we have a full-time foster support team, so our volunteers can focus on love and care.
Every time you open your home to a shelter animal, you change a life. Timmy’s journey reminds us that older animals, even after loss and hardship, are still full of life and love. Thanks to the care of a shelter team, the generosity of a community, and the open hearts of a foster family, this small senior dog found his way home again.
