5,000 Adoptions and Counting: GSRNC Celebrates a Quarter Century of Rescue Work

German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California (GSRNC) is thrilled to announce two extraordinary milestones: 25 years of rescue work and the adoption of our 5,000th dog. These achievements reflect decades of dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the German Shepherds who depend on us.
Our milestone girl, Roo, embodies everything our rescue stands for. Through the tireless work of countless volunteers, including transporters, fosters, adoption counselors, and behind-the-scenes coordinators, Roo was able to find the loving forever home she deserves. Her adoption is more than a number (though 5,000 is a darn big one). It’s a symbol of hope, teamwork, and the belief that every Shepherd deserves a chance.
Rescue work is deeply rewarding, but it also comes with challenges. It requires resilience, patience, and the courage to face situations that don’t always go as planned. Overcrowded shelters, unexpected owner surrenders, dogs left behind due to life changes - these realities are why we exist.
Our twin milestones belong to every volunteer who has given their time, energy, and heart to our mission. You are the reason we can pull dogs from overcrowded shelters. You are the reason Roo, and 4,999 shepherds before her, found safety, healing, and love. There is no rescue without you.
As we celebrate these achievements, we’re also looking forward to our biggest event of the year: the Wags to Riches fundraiser hosted aboard the historic USS Hornet in Alameda. More than just a party, this special night fuels our ability to save more German Shepherds across Northern California and supports our spay and neuter clinics, reducing shelter overcrowding and easing the burden on rescues throughout the region. While we're excited to report the event is already sold out, donations to GSRNC are always needed and may be made at our website.
In fact, this year’s Wags to Riches carries even more meaning than usual. It’s not just a celebration. It’s a promise that our next 25 years will be just as impactful as our last.
