The Fire This Time

October 2020

Welcome to Bay Woof, October 2020

Hello Dog Lovers,

This month’s Bay Woof is hot - flaming hot.

We’re now seven months into the global pandemic and, in some ways, not much has changed since COVID-19 first upended our lives back in March. We still have our dogs to comfort us, to drag us out of bed and make sure we get outside daily - except when there’s too much smoke to breathe.

What has changed, of course, are the wildfires, and this month’s issue tracks the impacts on area humans and animals. We’ve got tales of fire rescue work from Humane Society Silicon Valley, Tony La Russa’s ARF, and Hopalong Animal Rescue, plus some pet disaster prep tips to make sure Rex’s go-bag is always ready.

In other news, Ren Volpe’s “Stop Talking to Your Dog” explains the counter-intuitive way to communicate with your dog more effectively. A report from Full Belly Bus about it’s community service work, news from the Shelter Zone, and the latest from the SF Commission of Animal Control and Welfare are just some of the other tidbits in this month’s issue.

For most of us, October will also be the month to VOTE, since early voting is safer than braving the crowds on Election Day. Whether you mail in your ballot, drop it off at a polling station, or vote in person (socially distanced and masked, naturally), please make sure you do it – it’s how we take care of each other and our democracy. Don’t know where to vote? Visit our Bark the Vote page to find your polling place.

Finally, we’re happy to report that after last month’s re-launch debut issue, the love has been pouring in via cards, emails, and donations. Thank you - it sure has lifted our spirits. We hope Bay Woof continues to provide a gathering place for our community of dog lovers during these dark times and beyond.

For now, stay safe, stay well, and keep on wagging.
