And the Award for Most Extended House-training Goes To…
A California couple made news recently when they volunteered to raise their 20th puppy for Guide Dogs of the Desert, a Whitewater-based nonprofit that’s been pairing guide dogs with people who are blind or visually impaired at no cost to the recipient since 1972. Ruth Carey and her husband are among the group’s longest-serving volunteer puppy raisers, those selfless souls who bring home young future guide dogs to nurture for the first 18 months of their lives.
Can’t commit to that much house-training (or the heartbreak of eventually letting go)? You can still help sponsor a guide pup. Learn more at Guide Dogs of the Desert

Barking All the Way: Holiday Tunes for Dogs
Relentless holiday music driving you nuts? Now you can share that dubious joy with your pup. “Raise the Woof,” the self-proclaimed first Christmas single designed exclusively for dogs, mixes a reggae beat with the sounds of bells, squeaky toys, and owners’ voices. Tails.com, the dog food company that produced the cut, says it’s based on research about how dogs interact with sound plus input from animal behaviorists.
The song was recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios (how’s that for a pedigree?). A limited edition vinyl pressing will benefit Dudes & Dogs, a men’s mental health organization.

What Pandemic? Border Crossing Canine Flouts Travel Ban
Diamond, a young German Shepherd, probably wasn’t thinking about coronavirus travel bans when she escaped from her home in New Brunswick, Canada, and crossed an international border bridge into Fort Kent, Maine. Friends on the U.S. side eventually found the dog and were able to coordinate a handoff at a border station. Diamond’s reportedly happy to be back home in Canada, but she remains mum on the motive behind her international jaunt.

What Does Sharing Mean to You? Pup and Gator Disagree
A Florida man made national news recently with a dramatic video that shows him leaping into a waist-deep pond to wrestle his three-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Gunner, from the jaws of an alligator. Amazingly, both man and pup survived the ordeal, and Gunner has since recovered from a gator-inflicted puncture wound.
The sudden attack was captured by a camera set up to monitor local wildlife as part of a project called Sharing the Landscape. Guess the gator had a different definition of sharing.
