  • Although grain-free dog food may help with some food allergies, it’s not a cure for every pup. Your dog may also have a protein-related allergy to dairy, beef, chicken, or chicken eggs.

  • Due to metal shortages during World War II, dry dog kibble made from by-products of cereal manufacturing became more popular than canned dog food. But the first commercial dry dog food was actually invented in 1860 by  England-based businessman James Spratt who created a wheat-based biscuit he called the “Patented Meat Fibrine Dog Cake.”

  • While your dog's dental structure was designed to shear or tear a piece of food, some say to soak dry kibble in hot water for 20 minutes before feeding to promote better dental health.

  • Adding a tablespoon of plain, unsweetened canned pumpkin to your dog's meal twice a day may help with occasional mild constipation or diarrhea. But don't use canned pumpkin pie filling as it may contain undesirable ingredients that could make your dog sick.

  • Dogs may benefit from adding fatty acids to their diets, including linoleic acid, omega-6, and omega-3, which are found in safflower oil, walnuts, sunflower seeds, eggs, tofu, peanut butter, avocados, sardines, anchovies, soybeans, and flaxseed, among other foods. But not all of these foods may be appropriate for your dog - always consult your vet before adding new items to your dog’s diet.
