  • A study by University of Toronto researchers found that people who sleep near their dogs or in the same bed generally don’t experience disrupted sleep. In fact, humans were more apt to disrupt the dog's sleep.

  • According to a recent study published in the Journal of Wildlife Management, when dogs encounter bears in the wild, dogs are the aggressors in 54% of incidents. The study also found that dogs did not come to their owners’ defense in 36% of bear encounters. In an interview with the New York Times, the study’s lead author, Tom Smith, said, "Most house dogs are not that well trained [for a bear encounter],” adding,  "They don’t fight your fight for you."

  • Is a dog's bark an emotional expression or does it contain information a human can't understand? Researchers at Lithuania’s Kaunas University of Technology are now using artificial intelligence to try to find out. Relying on machine-learning methods, they're analyzing recordings of German Shepherds to try to determine if the dogs are expressing happiness, anger, sadness, or loneliness.

  • For home deliveries, the Royal Mail, the UK’s primary postal and courier service, recently requested dog owners post a free, printable door notice, available in English and Welsh. The notice is intended to prompt the delivery person to pause while the owner moves the dog to another room or ensures the dog is held securely before opening the door.

  • Sometimes it's hard to tell if your dog is experiencing pain. That’s because of an inherited  instinct not to display any weakness that could increase their vulnerability. Some telltale signs to look out for include mobility issues such as limping, difficulty lying down or finding a comfortable resting position, shaking or trembling, unusual posture, excessive panting when resting, changes in facial expression, or reduced appetite.
