DOGS in ART

This month’s issue is supported in part by SF Animal Medical Center and dog lovers like you.

Welcome to Bay Woof, May 2023

We Arf for Art!

Okay, it must be said: dogs don’t really appreciate art. But artists definitely appreciate dogs.

Georgia O’Keefe had her Chows, René Magritte his Pomeranians, and Pablo Picasso had Lump, his beloved Dachshund and the only creature – human or animal – allowed in the master’s studio while he was working. In fact, Lump and Picasso lived together for 16 happy years and died within 10 days of each other, arguably the most faithful relationship in the artist’s famously checkered life.

This month, Bay Woof explores Dogs and Art, starting with a report by Michael Angelo Torres from the unlikely intersection of punk, art, and pups. Lisa Bloch with Marin Humane shows how a unique collaboration between artists with developmental disabilities and shelter dogs benefits both. Trainer Sara Scott writes about the magic of dog training where science and art meet. Plus we’ve got the lowdown on Petchitecture’s upcoming benefit gala, showcasing photographs, videos, pet portraits, and just possibly you and your very own pup.

Elsewhere in the issue, Ren Volpe with GoDogPro offers a timely warning about the dangers of foxtail and how to protect your pup with weed season ramping up. Trainer Cyd True has the scoop on what every dog guardian needs to know about getting rid of a nasty intestinal bug called giardia. Also on the health beat, Commission Tails examines the challenges facing veterinary care in today’s San Francisco, while Ask Dr. Dog explores “Everesting,” a novel fundraising challenge to support veterinary mental health.

On a lighter note, you’ll definitely want to learn about Wonder Dog Rescue’s exciting new eastward expansion (we bet it’s farther than you think). And of course, no issue would be complete without the usual suspects: Mr. Smarty Pants and his furry factoids, Nose for News with the latest dog headlines, and Red & Howling’s sweetly comic take on all things canine.

Here at Bay Woof, we believe every dog is a work of art. So cuddle up with your favorite pup and enjoy a gallery stroll through our May issue together!

Artfully yours,
