July 2021
The Mighty Little Dog
Welcome to Bay Woof, July 2021
Howdy Dog Lovers,
Is it hot enough for you yet? The summer is baking its way across the PNW so don’t forget that hot sidewalks are not a dog’s best friend, nor are hot cars. Please take care of yourselves and your shorter pals by staying cool and hydrated.
This July we’re thinking about puppies, small dogs, and those we’re leaving behind while we head back to the office (ugh).
Small dogs are mighty dogs! Ren Volpe of Go Dog Pro shares some understanding of what these little guys and dolls need - which may be much different (or exactly the same) as their larger-breed cousins. Has a new puppy entered your life? Diane Corso of Prosh Pets offers a handy list of the top five training tips for new puppies that will set you on the path to a happy adult dog.
Elsewhere in the issue, you’ll find essential pointers for managing your dog’s separation issues when you finally return to the office after this long Covid break. Shared by Paula Benton, behaviorist and trainer at SF ACC, these tips will help you feel more confident that your pal’s okay while you’re out working to bring home the bacon...or the organic kibble, as the case may be. And don’t miss this month’s feature on Surf Dog Ricochet for a fun peek inside the life of a canine superstar.
Our July columns are as hot as this summer’s global warming. Nose for News rounds up the latest dog headlines, including one about a Border Collie who went missing after an accident and turned up somewhere you won’t believe. The Monthly Woof by Kelly Gorman Dunbar (of Sirius) gives the inside scoop on how a city girl made the switch to country living at her new dog farm. Sara Scott, dog trainer, pens the Good Dog! column this month, offering tips for making your walk not a chore but a treat, which will definitely come in handy when no one wants to go outside in the heat. Commission Tails, written this month by Commissioner Annemarie Fortier, gives a candid look at what inspired her to serve on the city’s animal welfare body. Shelter Zone, by Kathryn Bonham of Furry Friends Rescue, recounts the tale of dear Bruno who arrived with severe health issues amid the pandemic but has now found his forever home. And for those inevitable wildfires heading our way this fire season, we’ve got the planning essentials to keep you and your dog safe in this month’s Ask Dr. Dog column by HSSV’s Joanne Jacobs. Last but not least, Red and Howling and Mr. Smarty Pants Knows round out our month’s offerings with fun and factoids, respectively.
No matter how you spend these hot days of summer, we’re glad you’ve chosen to make Bay Woof a part of your life. Have a happy July - we’ll see you again when the real dog days hit in August!
