Webster’s Wait: In Love, Timing Is Everything

There are some shelter dogs who quietly change you. They don’t demand attention or steal the spotlight, but they find their way under your skin and into your heart. Webster was one of those dogs.
He endeared himself to all of us at Humane Society of the North Bay in a way that was hard to explain. I would think about him when I was home, wondering how a dog so gentle and good could still be waiting for a home of his own. Webster reminded me of the shy kid at school, the one who just wanted friends, who sat patiently hoping someone would notice. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body. His sweetness was unwavering.
Webster waited far too long at the shelter, and we could never understand why. To us, he was one of the very best dogs we’d ever known. Some would call him bombproof, the kind of dog who fits effortlessly into any situation. Children? He adored them. Babies? He was soft and careful. Goats and chickens? Calm and respectful. Other dogs? He’d gently roll over and show his belly, instantly putting everyone at ease.
Webster was a big-hearted softie with a brilliant mind. He remembered the cars of the volunteers who took him on outings and would trot right over, sitting patiently by the door, ready to go. He wanted to see the world, to belong, to be part of a family.
His loyalty was quiet but profound. His trust was given freely. His love was limitless.
Webster would have thrived in any home, one filled with kids and animals or a quiet one with a single person looking for a devoted companion. He never asked for much, only kindness and a chance.
For so long, it felt like a mystery as to why Webster was still waiting. But love, as it turns out, arrives on its own timetable. Webster wasn’t overlooked. He was waiting for his perfect match.
That match finally came in the form of his wonderful adopter, Sarah.
Webster, today known as Miles, found his forever home on Sarah’s beautiful ranch, where his days are filled with wide-open spaces, horses, and two lovely doggy friends. He is living the life he always deserved, a life full of belonging, purpose, and love.
This happy ending would not have been possible without the incredible support of Underdog Animal Rescue, who stepped up to help make this adoption happen, and without Jen Miller, who opened her heart and home to foster Webster during his long wait. Jen took him everywhere, giving him the exposure he so desperately needed and showing the world who Webster truly was. As a final love letter to Webster, Veronica Lindsey of Jassver Art created a beautiful portrait in his honor, a reminder that he was always loved, even as he waited for his forever home.
Throughout his nearly two years at the shelter, Webster’s sweet nature never faltered. He remained happy-go-lucky, kind to everyone he met, a dog who never knew a stranger, only a friend he hadn’t made yet. His story reminds us that love is patient, that the best matches take time, and that some hearts are simply worth waiting for.
